Volunteer Job Possibilities

Driver

Each week a team of three (3) people are on driver duty. The driving week begins on Sunday and continues through Saturday. Teams are assigned for six month periods, from January-June, and July-December. The final scheduled and contact information for the upcoming month is sent to the Teams the week prior to the beginning of their month. The three people on the Team are responsible for covering the entire week. They decide among themselves who will retrieve messages, who will be available on certain days to drive and who will be on back-up duty. Each person on the team is responsible for picking up their Driver Packet at the Fearrington Cares Office by Friday of the week prior to their shift.

Back-up Driver

Provides driving assistance “on-call” and as a substitute for the routinely scheduled drivers, as needed.

Handy Person

Helps with minor plumbing, carpentry, general home repairs. This might include: changing out-of-reach light bulbs; programming garage doors; changing storm-to-screen doors; fixing leaky faucets, replacing smoke detector batteries, hanging pictures.

Nurse

Helps with health-related clinics, such as blood pressure and foot care clinics, health screenings, and immunizations. Position does not require an active North Carolina license.

Office Receptionist

Works in the Fearrington Cares office from 9am to noon one day every two weeks to welcome visitors, answer office phone, make appointments, manage equipment loans and provide clerical support to the Administrative Assistant as needed.

Computer Help Group

Help residents set up equipment, install software,diagnose problems, etc. Need to have 5 years experience with hardware and software on either a Mac or PC.

Special Events Worker

Helps with planning, greeting attendees, and site arrangements at special events sponsored by Fearrington Cares, such as the Independent Living Expo, the Fearrington Cares Annual Meeting, various educational programs and special social programs.

Fearrington Friends

Connects volunteers with anyone who desires regular contact from a “neighbor”. This contact could be as simple as a daily telephone call or a regular in-person visit. Friends can help by watering plants, sorting mail or going out for a stroll. Friends can also provide brief respite for caregivers. Men and women volunteers are most welcome. Committee Chair

Reviews volunteer registration forms and records, recruits committee members, calls regular meetings as needed, prepares agendas, sees that meeting notes are taken and distributed, follows up between meetings on tasks assigned to committee members, reports committee activity to and seeks input from the Board of Directors.

Committee Member

Attends and actively participates in regular committee meetings, brings ideas to the table, and accepts responsibility to share tasks—for example, researching an idea for a new service, handling arrangements for a seminar or writing up a proposed program.
